The above title would probably make the reader wonder if this is some sort of thesis? No Sir this is no thesis on Tamil it’s a mental recall of my observations of the language and people associated with it.
I have heard many people say that Tamilians( as the Tamil people are popularly known) are very crazy or obsessed with the Tamil language to the extent that apart from learning the English language they are least bothered to learn any other language.
Earlier I used to agree with the above and used to get into an argument with any Tamilian I met that why don’t they learn Hindi language as it’s the National language of India. It took me more than 25 years of my life to realize that Hindi is not the sole national language of India there are 21 other national languages in India, Hindi is one of them. If you find it hard to believe, please check (http://indiaimage.nic.in/languages.htm). When I learned this my view of the people and their language took a full U-turn.
It made me wonder that when we see any European country and its citizens, they are so protective and proud of their respective languages our immediate reaction is “Wow these guys really know how to preserve their language and culture” and when we see the same scene re-enacted in our own country’s state we label them as people who are rigid and stubborn with a nasty attitude.
Having stayed in Chennai for 2 years and having observed the people and their culture from very close quarters, I feel the entire country should be proud of them, they are the sole state as far as I remember who carry their language and their culture proudly on their sleeves as they are proud owners of a language which is one of the oldest languages that exist in the world today being more than 2000 years old and also one of the very few Indian languages totally independent of Sanskrit.
Think of Chennai and what comes to mind is the unbearable hot and sultry climate, but Chennai, the heart of Tamil-Land is also an unparalleled land of Passion.
Chennai is the sole city in India which has the largest Rock-Fan following throughout the country, want a visible proof of the same? Visit Saarang, the IIT-Madras annual cultural festival, no other cultural festival in the entire country has an entire pavilion dedicated to the rock stars who come in from various parts of the state and perform live, day-in and day-out for 4 days at a stretch.
Chennai is the place where you would find Bike-Crazy guys who exhibit a hitherto unseen or unfelt love for the sheer thrill of biking, driving endlessly on the endless ECR road for hours at stretch, performing stunts with their bikes which ends the line between “Man and Machine” and they are one entity in total, talking and breathing to each other oblivious of their surroundings doing just one thing, Enjoying the sheer thrill which is born out of Passion.
Being an Indian who has spend most of his life in North India I was a witness to strange forms of dance in parties or festivals, dances which never made any sense to me as I perceived them as a drill with some music in the background majorly of two forms – Arms high up in the air and jumping up and down and secondly of people dancing in a circle once they clap out and then they clap in. Chennai and its people taught me as to what sheer Passion combined with the right music can do to the art of dancing– It can give a “high” unheard or unseen before by both ways – Either by just watching them perform or jumping yourself into the fray.
Now after reading this you can do 2 things – Either ignore this and move on or jump in the boat with the “Tam” gang and learn there is much more to life than the monotonous routine, there is “Passion”.

Bhai I'd say... u need to do some homework on the article stuff.
Please refer to following Stuff regarding national lang. of india.
"Neither the constitution nor the laws of India accord the status of "National Language" to any language in India. There is a law which basically says no language will be made the National Language unless and until all the constituent states of the Union of India accept it. Out of the 28 states and 7 union territories, only 10 states and 3 union territories have Hindi as the principal official language."
The fact is that Hindi & English ('cos it was there before independence, to bring in changes slowly)... ARE ONLY 2 OFFICIAL Languages to be used by the Central Administration.
Rest 20-21 are recognised official state (communication)lang.
& SECONDLY... bhai I know tujhe "chennai jhelnaa padaa hai" to kyon ......... :)))
with luv,
KS
hey.. being a chennai-ite and a tamilian myself... i do feel the handicap of not knowing hindi...
imagine the plight of tamils outside chennai... why would they cripple themselves by not learning hindi?? cos its out of the curriculum... but then again, tamil culture by way of art, movies and the rest is by far equivalent to ROI, just cos tamils dont have a choice but to make their language thrive....
And, fyi.. the tamil is chennai is one of the most corrupted slang the language has ever seen... Pure tamil is really rich and beautiful, just by its sheer simplicity.
The tamil language was and is spoken by people outside India, even other than Srilanka for hundreds of ears..
And by way of the language itself, tamil has very less in common to the other sanskritized languages.
There is an equivalent tamil word for every hindi/sanskrit word, though not in the colloqueial sense...
That is perhaps why, tamilians find it difficult to learn hindi...
Though I had hindi as a third language, I never took intrest to learn it, cos i wasnt able to relate to simple things like giving gender to non living things...(that is absent in tamil)
Just used to mug up answers letter by letter and cleared exams with mere memory power...
But then again, necessity is another key factor.. Never found hindi a need... Still, back then, in good old Doordarshan times, atleast the cricket commentaries and the serials like nukkad, mahabharat, etc did help us tune our ears to hindi...
Being a Tamilian myself, I could understand your conception of Tamilians. But, more than the people being proud of Tamil and making it live, I think the Chief Minister Karunanidi banned Hindi from the state board syllabus. He is a Tamil maniac. So, the people were not allowed to study Hindi. Only the CBSE guys in Tamil Nadu know Hindi to an extent.
BTW, first timer here. Came blog hoppping. Interesting stuff you have here!
@gayathri
Karunanidhi did not ban hindi
The first anti-hindi riots took place in 1937-38 when the Indian National Congress imposed hindi on Madras presidency. 2 ppl died in police custody.
The second major riot happened in 1965 - this was mainly spear headed by Anna.
Do you know the reason ?
As per the constitution in 1950, only hindi was supposed to become the "national lang" - NOT even english - this would disadvantage the non-hindi ppl since they cant even compete in english !!!
It was bcoz of the 1965 riots that the central govt has both english and hindi in devanagari script as per art. 343 as the OFFICIAL langs of central govt.
Art 345 gives every state to select its own OFFICIAL language
Which means that hindi, english, Tamil, etc are all OFFICIAL languages but in different regions - India has NO national lang or NO one official lang - 23 OFFICIAL langs.
@soliloquist
hey.. being a chennai-ite and a tamilian myself... i do feel the handicap of not knowing hindi...
Do you know that the central govt spends Rs. 80 crores every year for promoting hindi ?
Even in 1965, when Shashtri gave the famous call for Indians to skip one meal a day to prevent accute food crisis, the central govt spent 2.1 Million USD to promote hindi
This was the time when we were importing 2 ship loads of wheat a day from US to barely survive, we had a literacy rate of 24 % and we were spending 2.1 million USD for one language....
If this kinda money is made available to any language - any language can be known throughout India.
@kshitij
{The fact is that Hindi & English ('cos it was there before independence, to bring in changes slowly)... ARE ONLY 2 OFFICIAL Languages to be used by the Central Administration. }
2 OFFICIAL LANGS @ central govt
and any state can choose its own OFFICIAL LANG
for TN its Tamil and english
Communication from center to TN is in english n hindi
Communication from TN to center is in Tamil and english
23 OFFICIAL languages - in different regions/administrative regions.
I am loving this :) Carry on
@Anon - *friendly hug* - Please reveal yourself.
@Rohin - *another friendly hug* - I'm amazed to see such impartial views from a 'northie'.
Most immigrants from the north of the vindhyas term Chennai/TN as the worst place in India - reason being lack of hindi. They keep cribbing, whining and crying that the tamilians dont respect the national language. I feel really sorry for their illiteracy despite their respectable educational backgrounds.
The city or the people is NOT hostile. Its the hostile (or belligerent?) attitude of the brain-washed immigrants that make them feel isolated or not able to mingle with the local community. I'm sure you'd have felt the same during the initial days.
If people from the north decide to live in Chennai/TN, they must realise that HINDI is NOT the only 'national' language and they can't expect the linguistic comforts that they enjoy. If they need to make a living and survive in Chennai/TN, its high time they start learning a little (the least they can try) of the local language and get a life instead of whining.
@Gayathri - Get your facts right before you speak.
P.S->I mean no offence to the 'national' language. If my comment had offended anbody, my apologies.
Please see this link and the articles mentioned in the Constitution.
http://www.constitution.org/cons/india/p17.html
Nowhere in the constitution is defined the 'national language' of the Indian Union. Its just English and Hindi are recognised as the 'official languages' of the Union. States may or may not endorse Hindi as their official language. See Official Languages Act of 1963 for more info.
Cheers!
Siva
Anon,
Are you some govt official? Facts at finger tips. Excellent! Good information.
Siva,
I said, "I think the Chief Minister Karunanidi banned Hindi... "
I "think"....
Please read carefully before you speak.
@siva, gayathri
I am just a lazy grad student whoz a bit tooooo lazy to create an id, thats why sticking with anon profile...stumbled across this blog - thats it !
BTW, namez...Koman Vijay.
Its high time now that we Indians stop discriminating people based on languages and states. India is such a diversified country and we keep forgetting that Britishers exploited this to divide and rule on us for 200 years!!
Politicians today are doing the same thing. Divinding people on basis of color, caste, creed, languages for their votes and rule us.
Never forget.. simple old words we learnt in schools..
United we stand, divided we fall!!
I just wrote an article in my blog being fed up by the question "Why South Indians don't want to learn Hindi?".
I believe I had provided some valid points.
http://unitingindia.blogspot.com/
Let me know your thoughts.
I am a Thamizhan but I have lived all over India (Bombay, Delhi, Calcutta and Madras of course). I can speak both Hindi as well as Thamizh fluently.
I am of the opinion that kids should take the time to learn as many useful languages as possible when they are young. These days, you have to know English to make a decent living. So that's a given. But if you want yourselves to be marketable in the Northern part of India, then why not learn Hindi too? Learning another language doesn't mean that you are forsaking your mother tongue!! It's just plain commonsense.
In that aspect, I respect Keralites. They are willing to learn any language (Hindi, English, Tamil, Arabic ;-) in order to advance their careers and lives. Shouldn't that be the ultimate goal?
Firstly, I would tell you guys that I am not a guy from a Hindi speaking state and I am not a Tamilian either.
Now, Since Tamil Nadu is an integral part of India it has to more or less speak Hindi someway or the other since they can't communicate with most of the Indians coz not everyone in this country knows Tamil.If I am not wrong Tamil is not spoken in any other state. Hindi is,in most of the states. Com'on guys it's just another language. There's a
thin line between patronizing your language and ignorance. Since I can't communicate in my native Official language in any other state doesn't mean I should speak in English or coz not every one speaks English either. But its all about convenience and that makes it easy to exchange emotions.
Now why Hindi....Simple Its a widely spoken language in the country and its communication gets easier if you know it... Simple thats it..
Some stupid political gimmicks and we being Indians just flow along with the charm.... The bottom line is we are all fools.... And we are in the trap of a serious political foul play.. Lets change the system and the country.. Thats what I wanted to convey.. I am an Indian and would love to die as an Indian.. Jai hind...
